Mary Antin's Journey to Boston
Born in Russia in 1881, Mary Antin moved with her family to Boston at the age of 13. Settling in Chelsea and later the South End, Antin would become one of the most renowned immigrant writers of her generation. Years before penning her famous autobiography, The Promised Land (1912), she wrote a series of letters to her uncle describing her harrowing journey from Russia to Boston. It was published in 1899 under the title From Plotzk to Boston.
